If the economy continues to dig itself a hole......
Will we see a reduction in conspicuous consumption?
Friday, October 10, 2008
Houston Chronicle society columnist Shelby Hodge says it hasn't happened yet.
"I haven't seen anybody cutting back yet, i think everyone's in a bit of a state of shock. The restaurants are still pretty full and the jewelry is still there. But I suspect in another couple of weeks we're gonna see things changing. It just hasn't really hit home yet, I don't think."
One place that won't tone it down is the Four Seasons hotel in New York, where the Ty Warner suite goes for a cool $34,000 per night.
"Spectacular views of the city; mother of pearl walls; you have crystal glass chandeliers; you have a rock crystal sink."
The hotel's Linda Aslanian says the price is non-negotiable and they won't discount no matter how tough things get. She says they have guests who spend an entire week in the suite, sleeping on a $64,000 mattress.
